Camphorsulfonic acid is a organosulphur compound.Camphor-10-sulfonic acid () (CSA) is extensively used as an acid catalyst.It can be used in a catalytic amount to protect hydroxyl groups as tetrahydropyranyl (THP) ethers using dihydropyran.It also catalyzes the protection of ketones as ketals.It is a useful catalyst for the intramolecular ring opening of epoxides.CSA can also be used to catalyze nucleophile-promoted alkyne-iminium cyclization in the total synthesis of pumiliotoxin A.

Application

(±)-Camphor-10-sulfonic acid serves as a chiral, bench-stable sulfonic acid reagent widely used in asymmetric synthesis and catalysis. Its rigid terpene backbone provides excellent stereochemical control in enantioselective transformations, while the sulfonic acid group enables efficient protonation, activation, and phase-transfer applications. Functions effectively in esterifications, sulfonations, and as a catalyst or resolving agent in industrial-scale processes requiring high reproducibility and functional group tolerance.
